In my personal experience, I have not seen a lot of mainstream media or music that showcases the culture and community of Indigenous peoples. I believe that being aware of traditional music and how it empowers an ethnic group, out of your own, which mine comes from a Chicana perspective. Being Mexican with background connections to Indigenous Guanajuato's tribes, makes me even more intrigued to learn about more American tribes and their culture, and how I and others can apply that to their own ethnic group. Sharing Indigenous perspectives through music that uplifts them while also challenging colonizer's false narrative.
"Settler colonialism will not be undone by analysis alone, but through lived and contentious engagement with the literal and stolen ground on which people stand and come together upon." - C. Snelgrove, R. Dhamoon & J. Corntassel
Having the importance of community engagement with colonizers and Indigenous peoples, other ethnic groups. It is our duty to put in our part that enables them to fully have resurgence, since this act of resurgence cannot solely be done by just the Indigenous peoples.
In the “Reenvisioning resurgence Indigenous Pathways,” a quote that stood out to me was, "When market transactions replace kinship relationships, Indigenous homelands and waterways become very vulnerable to exploitation by shape-shifting colonial powers,” (Corntassel, pg. 10). This quote talks about how Indigenous peoples are not materialistic and prioritize genuine relationships with one another and how exactly that causes lots of issues.
Our deed is to not only participate in community events that will further our understanding of their practices, traditions, and perspectives, but to make stable connections with one another. Genuine relationships and connections are more powerful than others may think.
View Poetry - John Trudell
Discover the collection of creative work done by Indigenous peoples that increases awareness of struggles and corrects the false narrative. Trudell is widely recognized for activism and standing up for Indigenous people's rights. In this poem, Trudell clearly acknowledges the genocide and the devastating effects of it in the present through symbolism of tears. It's outrageous that the enemy has expectations for you to help and appreciate them, when they are selfish and care about their own benefit, money. This quote stood out to me since one of the reasons as to why the government was not helping Indigenous peoples after the Second World War, even after Indigenous people helped them in war like Ira Hayes.
Indigenous Resurgence via music
Empowering people and stories through music is very powerful and efficiently. Explore what we have to offer and how we can contribute to your success in getting in touch with ethnic groups via media. The presence of Indigenous peoples gets amplified through music and poetry.
The impact of this song is that it honors and shares awareness of the work of an Indigenous war hero, Ira Hayes. Ira Hayes did not have a voice for himself since he fought for a country that did not appreciate him, which made him fall into a depression. Johnny Cash did a cover of LaFarge's and was what made it mainstream. LaFarge's people were going through the struggles of poverty because of colonization and lawmakers. A country that tries to erase history especially towards Indigenous peoples, even when they get support and benefits from Indigenous peoples, but they choose to be unethical. LaFarge's main reason he participated in the War, was because he had high hopes of helping his people to decrease poverty and social issues.
